Existing exit surveys and interview notes exist within the Office of Student Success and Retention at SMU. The purpose of this study will be to perform a directed content analysis to determine if students are transfer-outs, stop-outs, or dropouts. In addition to categorization, we will work to understand the primary, secondary, and tertiary motivations/reasons for departure, as able. The content analysis and survey data findings can inform retention initiatives at SMU and inform the higher education community.
