Teaching

Teaching is a professional practice and mechanism for social change.

Education must begin with the solution of the teacher-student contradiction, by reconciling the poles of the contradiction so that both are simultaneously teachers and students.

Tenets of my teaching

Undergraduate introduction to the major

Why are specific majors more popular than others? I believe undergraduates are significantly more likely to major in a field if they have an inspiring and caring faculty member in their introduction to the field. And they are equally likely to write off a field based on a single negative experience with a professor. Therefore, I enjoy teaching introductory courses for this reason.

Assessment, evaluation, and research methods

As an educator, I embed assessment, evaluation, and research in every course. Specifically, how to design, conduct, critique, and use various AER methodologies and the results obtained from them. Data is everywhere and my future colleagues need to be data-informed decision-makers and help their supervisors make informed decisions.

Varied perspectives

Among the thorniest of issues that educators deal with is the relationship between theory and practice. Critical theory promises critique and new directions as it focuses on issues related to social justice, equality, and democratic values. I center these dialogues within my courses and ensure diverse scholars and voices are represented.

Project-based learning

I discovered the field of higher education student affairs via projects embedded in my undergraduate career. Therefore, project-based instruction is central to each of my courses. Project-based learning is student-centered andragogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students are believed to acquire more profound knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Opportunities for application make new theories, mental models, and lessons come to life.

Testimonials

Rigor with support

Dr. Grabsch is a real gem of a human. He’s a great guy and really cares about his students and their understanding of the material. His class is definitely not easy and can be stressful at times, but he is always there and willing to help you through any confusion you may have. Put in the work and it’ll pay off!

Applications in context

This course was so hands-on! It was great! The small size of the discussion groups allowed for a lot of personal attention from Dr. Grabsch, room to talk and ask questions which was also great.
