Continuing-student perceptions of their first-generation college student peers

Our study aims to examine the perceptions of continuing-generation college students towards first-generation college students and their experiences before and during college. Through a mixed methods design, we will investigate the knowledge and understanding of continuing-generation college students regarding their first-generation peers. We will also explore the extent to which identity salience and stigma impact the relationships between these two groups of students.

Understanding how continuing-generation college students perceive first-generation college students and the challenges they face can inform the development of effective support programs and policies to better serve the needs of first-generation students. Furthermore, by identifying and addressing any negative attitudes or stereotypes held by continuing-generation students towards first-generation students, this study can contribute to promoting a more inclusive and supportive campus culture for all students.
